The Regional Center

The Regional Center is a governmental agency that was created from Federal and State money and was designed to provide a variety of services to persons with developmental disabilities.  There are 7 Regional Centers in Los Angeles County.  The Regional Centers provide assessments, diagnosis, help plan and coordinate the care of someone with a developmental disability.  To be eligible the person must have been diagnosed with a developmental disability before their 18^th birthday.  Developmental Disabilities include Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Autism, Down’s syndrome, and Epilepsy.  The Regional Center provide many of the following services for their clients:  Respite Care, Day Programs, Work Programs (Supported Employment) , Transportation Services, Independent Living Skills Training, Education Services, to name a few.  Every year The Regional Centers face budget cut issues like all social programs do.  Call ahead to make sure the center you want still exists.  Regional Centers do not have an age requirement for eligibility and every county in California has a Regional Center, although some smaller counties may run their programs together as one agency.
